Over the past century, Fontanarossa, like other villages in Trebbia Valley, experienced significant emigration. Many left for nearby cities like Genoa and Milan, while others ventured to North America, particularly California. Here, we show an article from someone who emigrated and still lives there today.
“Since 1906, after the devastating earthquake that struck San Francisco, some residents of Fontanarossa migrated to the city in search of a better future. Life in America was far from easy, but through perseverance, they adapted and overcame numerous challenges, eventually finding a sense of stability. Many found work in waste collection services, a demanding job but one that offered a modest level of prosperity.
Like many other Italians, our fellow countrymen managed to establish an excellent reputation and were well-liked for their remarkable skills and abilities. Starting from the first disorganized groups in this sector, they eventually built two of the most important companies in Italian history. These companies are currently running efficiently and successfully, owing to the most recent and specialised equipment.
The photo above, dating back to the early 20th century, shows how this job was carried out at that time through horse-drawn carts.
Ernesto Mangini, a Fontanarossa native, is featured in the picture among his collaborators, including another fellow countryman, Angelo Chiappellone, known as “Ninin Picin”.
Ernesto Mangini, an example of a tireless worker, after leaving his hometown for California, started working in San Francisco, where he eventually settled with his family. As a deeply dedicated person, he was always ready to contribute to his adopted land, knowing well that he was also honouring his native country.
Mangini worked for 7 years before returning to Fontanarossa to visit his loved ones and marry Maria Moscone. He came back to visit in 1931 and 1949 and was so enthusiastic about Fontanarossa’s beauties that he always praised them; even though he lived far away, he remained close to his land of origin, not only with fond memories but also ready to contribute to initiatives for its improvement. This man is one of the most remarkable examples that shows how many emigrants managed to build a life in a foreign land without ever leaving their native country behind”.
